The National Museum was built on the site of the former Horse Gate. Construction began in 1818 and was completed in 1891.

Permanent Exhibitions are the Primeval history of Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia, Mineralogical & petrological collections, Zoological collections, Palaeontological collection, and Anthropological collection. Standing at the top of Wenceslas Square facing the National Museum, look to your left and you will see the former National Assembly building (1973), built on the site of the former Stock Exchange (1936-1938). This is now the world headquarters for Radio Free Europe.
